“Dell’Angelo” Hospital

The whole complex is structured in four different parts: the main block, the building named “Area Economale” (next to the main block), the third part named “Banca dell’occhio” and the parking area consisting of three covered levels.

The main block of the hospital consists then of two separate parts: the technological platform and the hospital rooms area for a total of nine floors (five floors for patients) and one underground level.

The platform performs the key functions of the hospital, housing the technological areas (basement), the operating theatres and the diagnosis and treatment areas (ground floor) and the visitors’ areas (first floor).

The peculiar feature connecting these two parts is a large sail-shaped glass structure, high as the building, that stretches along the length of the building and covers a large, bright entrance hall connected to all the facilities and public areas of the hospital.

Hospital facilities include five separate, independent buildings:

• The Hospital, including a commercial area for shops;
• Parking lot for 1,300 cars;
• Administrative-Store and System Control Units;
• Morgue and Ophtalmological Department;
• Conference Center for 200 people.

The design solutions adopted demonstrate the ability to bring together the architectural, technological, structural and environmental aspects in a single project. The technical and environmental solutions include: extensive use of high performing glass surface, green roof, natural ventilation, winter garden, small lakes in the park (that are also a water reserve in case of fire).

The innovative “camouflage” philosophy, whereby a building blends in with its surroundings, is plain to see in the large, grass-covered block that houses reception and the utilities. The ventilated facade not only ensures excellent insulation against heat and noise, it also plays an important part in the overall appearance of the whole site, as its colour creates a pleasing contrast with the green of the landscaped grounds surrounding the hospital.
