Milan, June 23, 2026 – Giorgio Finotti, CEO of Manens and Site Director for the Città della Salute e della Ricerca project, welcomed officials on site during the last week as part of an institutional visit led by Regione Lombardia, the Municipality of Sesto San Giovanni, and the foundations behind two of Italy’s leading research hospitals: the National Cancer Institute and the Carlo Besta Neurological Institute. The new complex, rising on the site of the former Falck steelworks, will bring both institutes together, creating a single major hub for clinical research, treatment and training.
On the technical side, the update delivered during the visit confirmed that work remains on track against the schedule set out in the Supplementary Agreement signed in December 2025. The foundation slab at level -2 is now 77% complete, and work has moved on to the floor slabs at the first basement level and ground floor, with the first floor about one-third done, across a total built area of around 200,000 sqm.
The project’s monthly output, currently around €8 million, continues to grow alongside the on-site workforce, which now counts about 190 people.
Once complete in 2029, the new hospital will offer around 650 beds and 29 operating theatres. The design, by MCA – Mario Cucinella Architects and inspired by the Hospital of the Future concept developed in 2000 by Renzo Piano and Umberto Veronesi, breaks away from the traditional single-block hospital model in favor of separate, interconnected buildings linked by green courtyards; a layout designed to make patients’ journeys through diagnosis and treatment simpler and more efficient.
From September 2026, crews will begin installing prefabricated components for the technical plant rooms and the parking area, with façade construction set to follow shortly after. Mechanical and electrical works will get underway throughout 2027.
The schedule coordinated by the site management team points to structural completion by September 21, 2029, with the new hospital becoming fully operational by March 2030, once testing and the relocation process are complete.
For Manens, the project ranks among its most significant projects considering its scale, technical complexity, and in its strategic importance to healthcare in Milan and across Lombardy. The institutional visit underlined the strong commitment of the institutions involved in a project that, as Regione Lombardia’s Deputy President Marco Alparone noted, calls for moving quickly to bring online a facility where excellence and innovation will serve the community.
