The Environmental Impact Assessment for the 2023–2037 Masterplan of Marco Polo Airport in Venice, has officially begun. The study, by Manens and IRIDE, represents a key step in shaping the airport’s future. This ambitious plan combines innovation, sustainability, and growth, strengthening its role as a strategic international hub.
The Assessment focuses on the project’s impact on the Venice Lagoon, a UNESCO World Heritage site with strict environmental and cultural protections. It also offers strategies to reduce the environmental footprint throughout all stages of the project – from its development to full operational capacity – through six points:
- Objectives of the Masterplan: defining a strategic vision aligned with regulations and territorial plans.
- Environmental and territorial context: assessing current conditions to ensure ecosystem protection.
- Design alternatives: analyzing solutions to identify those with the lowest impact.
- Planned interventions: detailing the project and construction phases.
- Construction impacts: identifying and mitigating temporary effects.
- Completed works impact: forecasting long-term effects and mitigation strategies
In recent years, Marco Polo Airport has completed significant projects that have enhanced its capacity and passenger experience. Between 2017 and 2020, key developments included the expansion of the Passenger Terminal (Lot 1), the Moving Walkway linking the main terminal to the dock, and the Pier Sud, which increased capacity in areas dedicated to extra-Schengen traffic.
The Masterplan sets the sights on a new sustainable future for Venice Airport. We are proud to contribute to this challenging project, which will take the airport to new heights of excellence and innovation.
