FEATURES

  • Trigeneration system: 900 kW electrical power, 940 kW thermal power, and 670 kW cooling power
  • Chilled energy production systems: total capacity of approximately 4200 kW
  • Thermal energy production systems: total capacity of approximately 2700 kW

The energy efficiency improvement intervention for the thermofrigorific production systems at Naples International Airport was necessitated by the annual increase in passenger volume. The existing thermofrigorific production systems (approximately 35 machines mostly located on the roof of Terminal T1) were replaced with a Single Hub for thermal and cooling energy production.

The project included the construction of a new technological building housing the new trigeneration plant (a gas-powered cogenerator and an absorber for the simultaneous production of electrical, thermal, and cooling energy) and the new thermofrigorific plant. Initially, geological, geotechnical, and hydraulic surveys were conducted, followed by an aeronautical study related to the interventions, as well as the design of building, structural, plant, and fire protection systems.

The consolidation of thermal and cooling production equipment ensured better future expandability and, importantly, improved management of scheduled and extraordinary maintenance interventions. Additionally, the use of an independent building allowed the installation of water-cooled chillers, significantly improving overall production efficiency.

The project prioritized reducing pollutant emissions, equipping the cogenerator with a catalyst to reduce carbon monoxide emissions, while the supplementary boiler was fitted with a premixing system to minimize NOx emissions. By employing these technologies, the systems ensured compliance with emission limit values.
