Inaugurated on July 26, 2025, the new hospital serving the area between Bari and Brindisi marks a significant step forward for public healthcare in the Apulia region. With 299 beds, 9 operating rooms, 10 diagnostic units, and a helipad, the Monopoli-Fasano Hospital was designed to provide high-quality healthcare to over 250,000 residents. The project combines advanced technology with environmental sustainability, aiming to deliver efficiency, comfort, and a more human-centered care experience.
Attending the opening ceremony were the President of the Apulia Region, Michele Emiliano; Regional Budget Councillor, Fabiano Amati; Director General of ASL Bari, Luigi Fruscio; the Mayors of Monopoli and Fasano; and numerous local officials, healthcare professionals, engineers, contractors, associations, and members of the public. Also present was the full design and construction management team, including Manens CEO Giorgio Finotti, Site Director Francesco Ruggiero, and architect Albert De Pineda of Pinearq.
A room within the new hospital has been named in memory of Gianluca Calace, former CEO of Steam (now Manens) and site manager of the project, who sadly passed away in 2023. This dedication honors his commitment and the key role he played in the development of the new facility.
The project was developed by Manens, in partnership with Pinearq and Sàito, who were responsible for architectural, structural, and MEP design, as well as sustainability consulting. At the heart of the project is a design vision that integrates architecture and landscape, inspired by the concept of a “hospital in a park”: buildings arranged around green courtyards, separate paths for patients, staff, and visitors, natural materials, abundant daylight, and spaces dedicated to well-being—such as a company nursery and a central agora. In terms of environmental performance, the hospital is expected to consume 30% less energy than standard benchmarks, thanks to renewable energy systems, rainwater collection and reuse, and eco-friendly construction choices.
The inauguration marks the completion of the construction phase. Final inspections and equipment installations are currently underway. The relocation of clinical and administrative activities from the old “San Giacomo” Hospital in Monopoli is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2025, allowing for the gradual activation of services from early 2026.
This is a pivotal moment for the Bari healthcare system, which, just a day earlier, celebrated the opening of another key facility: the new Asclepios III Surgical Pavilion at the Policlinico of Bari, now partially operational. This new building is part of a broader redevelopment plan for the university hospital and will host advanced cardio-thoracic specialties. Here too, Manens played a leading role—alongside Pinearq—signing the integrated design of the project.
The new facility spans eight floors and over 25,000 m², with 200 beds, 9 operating rooms (including one hybrid OR), and 16 intensive care beds for cardiac patients. It is already operational for internal medicine, respiratory diseases, thoracic and vascular surgery, and will soon welcome cardiac surgery, interventional cardiology, and transplant services.
Attendees at the ceremony included Regional Health Councillor Raffaele Piemontese, Policlinico General Director Antonio Sanguedolce, University of Bari Rector Stefano Bronzini, and Vito Montanaro, Director of the Regional Health Promotion Department.
