New Santobono Pausilipon Pediatric Hospital in Naples
The project team led by Proger SpA, including Manens S.p.A., Pinearq Slp., Inar Srl Arethusa Srl, and Zigarella Srl, has been assigned to design the new Pediatric Center in Naples.
The Santobono Pausilipon Hospital is one of Italy’s leading pediatric facilities – alongside Gaslini in Genoa, Meyer in Florence and Bambin Gesù in Rome – and the only one in Southern Italy. Despite the current management difficulties, including a severe lack of available space and beds, the Hospital is increasingly checking in pediatric patients from all over southern Italy, confirming its current role as a national reference point. This organizational gap is mainly due to the current structural layout, which is no longer adequate to meet the growing needs of patients.
To address this issue, the Hospital Authority has approved the project for a new facility that will rise in the Ponticelli District, in the eastern area of the Municipality of Naples. The new Santobono Hospital represents a significant healthcare opportunity and an urban revitalization project. The Guidance Document drafted for the Hospital highlights the social enhancement function of the project, involving the creation of an “Urban Center” for citizens.
This includes – besides the healthcare facilities – new spaces to promote socialization and interaction between the city and the healthcare facility.
The Masterplan aims for a strong integration of architecture and landscape: a campus developed along two axes, connecting with the surrounding areas. It features a large technological hall with inpatient wards on top and separate blocks, linked to the central hall and dedicated to research, day hospital activities, outpatient services and telehealth administrative offices. These structures alternate with green relaxation and socialization areas, lakeside areas, and covered pedestrian pathways. The facility, designed to be an absolute centre of excellence, is planned for around 500 beds and will cover approximately 80,000 square meters, with an estimated total investment of around 300 million Euros.
Manens is proud of this new commissioning, which follows the assignment of Construction Management services for the new hospital in Salerno, and confirms the company’s national leadership position in healthcare construction.
